Structure Installation (Industrial or Structural Steel Installation)
Structure installation refers to the process of assembling and erecting steel or metal frameworks used in buildings, factories, equipment support systems, or industrial facilities. This includes installing columns, beams, platforms, walkways, mezzanines, pipe racks, and support frames.
Scope of Structure Installation
The installation can range from small equipment support structures to large-scale industrial buildings or plant frameworks. It's commonly required in:
- Factories and manufacturing plants
- Power plants
- Oil & gas facilities
- Warehouses and commercial buildings
Key Steps in Structure Installation
Planning and Preparation
- Site Survey: Check foundation levels, anchor bolt locations, and clearance.
- Drawings Review: Confirm fabrication drawings, installation layout, and lifting plans.
- Safety Setup: Install barricades, signage, and fall protection systems.
Foundation & Base Plate Alignment
- Anchor bolts are set in concrete. Base plates are leveled and grouted to ensure vertical alignment of columns.
Steel Structure Erection
- Cranes or lifts are used to place columns and beams.
- Structural elements are connected using bolts or welding.
- Temporary supports may be used during assembly for safety and stability.
Bracing and Alignment
- Cross-bracing is installed to add stability.
- Laser levels or total stations ensure that structures are plumb, level, and square.
Final Fixing and Welding
- Tighten all bolts to specified torque.
- Perform structural welding where needed and inspect for quality.
- Apply anti-corrosion coating or paint as required.
Safety Measures
- Use of PPE: helmets, harnesses, gloves, etc.
- Rigging safety during lifting
- Strict adherence to load limits and lifting plans
- Fall protection for work at heights
Post-Installation
- Structural inspections (visual and NDT, if needed)
- Punch list completion
- Handover for subsequent installations (e.g., piping, electrical trays)
Proper structure installation ensures the strength, stability, and safety of industrial and commercial facilities. Accuracy, skilled labor, and strict safety protocols are key to successful and long-lasting installations.
