Ducting
Ducting refers to the system of tubes or channels used to transport air, fumes, dust, or other gases in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, as well as in industrial ventilation, dust collection, and exhaust systems.
Ducting is critical for maintaining air quality, temperature control, and regulatory compliance in commercial, industrial, and residential environments.
Types of Ducting
Based on Shape
- Rectangular Ducts - Common in commercial HVAC; easy to install in tight spaces.
- Round Ducts - More efficient airflow and lower pressure loss.
- Oval Ducts - Combine space-saving benefits of rectangular with airflow efficiency of round ducts.
Based on Material
- GI (Galvanized Iron) - Most common for HVAC systems; durable and corrosion-resistant.
- Aluminum - Lightweight, corrosion-resistant; used in cleanrooms or food industries.
- Stainless Steel - High strength and chemical resistance; used for industrial or high-temperature exhaust.
- Flexible Ducts - Made from plastic over metal wire coil; used in tight spaces or for temporary setups.
Ducting Components
Main Ducts and Branch Lines
- Dampers - Control airflow
- Elbows & Bends - Change airflow direction
- Diffusers, Grilles, and Registers - For air distribution
- Insulation - For thermal and acoustic control
- Support Systems - Hangers, brackets, and vibration isolators
Ducting Installation Process
Planning & Layout Design based on airflow requirements, space constraints, and system pressure.
Fabrication
- Ducts are fabricated from sheet metal or pre-manufactured sections, cut and joined.
Installation
- Ducts are assembled and suspended using hangers.
- All joints are sealed (typically with mastic or tape) to prevent leakage.
Testing & Balancing
- Airflow is tested and adjusted using dampers.
- Systems may undergo Duct Leakage Testing to ensure efficiency.
Applications of Ducting
- HVAC Systems - Supply and return air
- Dust Collection Systems
- Fume and Smoke Extraction
- Cleanroom Air Handling
- Process Exhaust in Factories
Maintenance
- Regular inspections for dust build-up, leaks, or corrosion
- Cleaning to maintain air quality and efficiency
- Filter replacement (in associated AHUs or exhaust fans)
Ducting is a vital system in both comfort and industrial environments, ensuring efficient air movement, ventilation, and environmental control. Proper design, material selection, and installation are essential for performance, safety, and energy efficiency.
